The water cycle: five questions, you mark yourself.

About three minutes. Do it on your own first. Every answer comes with a one-line explanation, and we go through the tricky ones in class on Thursday.

1Water turning from liquid into water vapour is called…

Liquid water gains heat and becomes water vapour. Condensation is the opposite: vapour losing heat and becoming liquid.

2Why does the outside of a cold Milo cup get wet in the canteen?

The cold cup cools the air touching it, so the water vapour in that air loses heat and condenses into droplets.

3Which of these makes evaporation faster?

Wind, a higher temperature and a larger exposed surface all make evaporation faster. Think of laundry on a windy day.

4Clouds are made of…

Water vapour is invisible. A cloud is what you see once that vapour has condensed into droplets and ice crystals high up.

5Singapore gets rain almost every week. Where does most of that water come from?

We are surrounded by warm sea. Water evaporates from it, rises, condenses into clouds, and falls back as rain.
